Camera Club News
Twenty-four members and 2 guests participated in the largest competition of the year Thursday, May 8, at the Art Center. Of the 42 prints submitted, Jan Dunlap's photo of a steam locomotive taken near the old ice plant in Van Wert was picked for first place. There was a 7 way tie for second, and the revote resulted in a two way tie. Keith Mongold's picture of a faun along a creek bank near his home was selected for second place.

Of the 20 slides viewed. Jodi Hattery and Rex Dolby were tied for first place. On the second vote, Dolby's slide of Bond Falls in the upper peninsula of Michigan prevailed over Jodi's picture taken in Ft. Wayne of an F-16 piloted by her husband. The club decided that from now on, if there are 30 entries or more, a third place will be awarded. The prize money will be split, 50% for 1st, and 25% each for 2nd and 3rd.

In other business, Gerald Kray purchased a remote cycler with a laser pointer to be used with PowerPoint presentations. This will allow the presenter to move about as he wishes and can point out any feature on the screen from any place in the room. The system's receiver plugs into a USB port on the computer and is matched with the signal from the remote.

Karl Gribler announced during his treasurer's report that the club's Discount Food Card sales are doing pretty well, considering the condition of the economy. The cards sell for $5, are good till April 1 of '09, and provide free or discounted food items at 18 different businesses. They may be obtained from any Camera Club member, or by calling 419-238-5889.

President Heckler said he planned to attend the "Seeing the Light!" photography workshop in Union City, IN May 10 and anyone who would like to attend would be welcome to go with him.

Jodi Hattery and Larry Dickerhoof volunteered to head a committee to straighten up the rooms upstairs. They will be contacting others to assist with the project.

The club welcomed new members, Marie Bird and Carl & Victoria Phlipot, and guests, Nancy Lichtensteiger and Aisha Watson.

The club's next meeting will be at 7 pm at the Art Center on May 22. A seminar open to the public will be conducted on how to use a computer to improve pictures.

For adults age 18 and over, an interest in photography and a membership in the Wassenberg Art Center are all that’s needed to become a member of the Wassenberg Camera Club. Although the club is formally organized, its meetings are usually conducted quite informally the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m. in the Art Center.

The second Thursday of each month is designated competition night. Members submit prints and slides on a predetermined theme for the club to judge. There is also an informative program as well as snacks that evening.

On other evenings, members may share pictures of their travels or vacations, discuss plans for upcoming events, or tell what they’ve learned at a conference or seminar they’ve attended.

Annually, the club is involved in the following events:

Sets up and supervises the photo exhibit at the Van Wert County Fair.

Assists the art center with all phases of a juried photo competition with cash prizes in October.

Assists the art center with staging of a noncompetitive photo exhibit, often with another photo club, in the spring.

Holds a special carry-in dinner and program at Christmas.

Participates in other camera clubs’ photocompetitions.

Club activities include:

  • Photo shoots
  • Pet shoots
  • Slide programs
  • Informal monthly competitions and workshops
  • Assist with the October Photography exhibit
  • Assist with Photography Exhibit at Van Wert County Fair
